  15. -----------

  17. PLAY and RECORD are simple MIDI file utilities, mainly intended for
  18. quick, command line use.  PLAY can be thought of as analogous to the
  19. TYPE command in DOS, except it plays a standard MIDI file.  RECORD reads
  20. incoming MIDI data and saves it to a MIDI format file.  RECORD is useful
  21. for saving quick sequences for playback with PLAY.  It may also be used
  22. to record MIDI System Exclusive dumps which PLAY can resend at a later
  23. time.  While PLAY has an interactive mode which allows a good bit of
  24. playback control, neither program is intended to replace the functions
  25. of a full sequencing program, just as the TYPE and COPY commands are not
  26. replacements for a full text editor.

  28. RECORD is new in with this release of PLAY, and should be considered
  29. a test version.  Also new is support for Microsoft-compatible mice.

  33. Installation
  34. ------------

  36. These programs requires no special installation, except that the help
  37. files, PLAY.HLP and RECORD.HLP, should reside either in the current
  38. directory, or in a directory contained in the DOS path.  To run, type
  39. "PLAY" or "RECORD".  See the "Command line usage" section of the help
  40. files for further details and options.

  42. PLAY version 1.5 is also included (PLAY15.EXE).  It is identical in
  43. function to PLAY version 2, but without the interactive display.  It
  44. requires less than half the memory of version 2, and will play MIDI
  45. files up to the maximum memory size of the system.  Version 2 is limited
  46. to about 90K of MIDI data.  Both versions have a single track limit of
  47. 64K bytes.

  49. This version of RECORD is limited to a single track containing 64K bytes
  50. of MIDI data.

  53. Hardware

  56. PLAY: Requires from 76K (version 1.5) to 194K (version 2) of memory,
  57. floppy or hard drive (if configurations are to be saved), and either an
  58. IBM Music Feature card, or a Roland MPU-401 compatible MIDI interface.

  60. RECORD: Requires 128K memory, floppy or hard disk, and MFC or
  61. MPU-compatible MIDI interface.
